The late Leovanni Mateo Alekzander Barbour was a beloved son from Urbandale, Iowa. Born on October 31, 2023, to Triston Barbour and Marisol Rivera, Leovanni faced immense medical challenges from the start. Despite a diagnosis of cerebellar hypoplasia—a condition where the cerebellum is smaller than usual—and a more severe diagnosis of Brain Stem Disconnect, Leovanni defied expectations.
His parents were overjoyed at his birth, especially when he weighed a healthy 6 lbs. 1 oz., despite predictions of only 4 lbs. However, just two days after his birth, an MRI revealed devastating news: not only did he have cerebellar hypoplasia, but significant parts of his midbrain were missing. This led to a rare diagnosis of Brain Stem Disconnect, with only seven known cases, all of which had fatal outcomes by seven weeks of age.
Leovanni’s parents, Marisol and Triston, were heartbroken, grappling with the reality of their son’s condition. A palliative care doctor advised that Leovanni be placed on Pediatric Hospice. Despite the grim prognosis, Leovanni’s family cherished every moment with him, providing him with immense love and care. Remarkably, he surpassed all medical expectations, living for six months and 19 days.
On May 19, 2024, Leovanni passed away peacefully at home in his father’s arms. His short life was filled with love and courage, leaving a lasting impact on his family. He is survived by his parents, his big sister Adaeigh, and other extended family members who will forever remember and love him.
In the wake of his passing, Amber Forrest, a kindergarten teacher, initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support the family with funeral and other related expenses. The goal is to raise $15,000 to help Triston, Marisol, and their family during this incredibly challenging time. Amber’s heartfelt plea highlights the community’s effort to stand with Leovanni’s family in their grief.
