The late Artrina De Lima was from Kahului, Hawaii. The community and her family are grappling with her sudden death and the ensuing financial burden, so this news is devastating. Artrina’s child, Kamalei De Lima, is fundraising for her funeral and for the care of her two younger children, Karma (16) and Isaiah (10).
On Monday, May 13th, the De Lima family received a life-altering phone call. Artrina was found unresponsive while in the custody of the Maui Community Correctional Center (MCCC). Although she was found lifeless, the authorities placed her on life support and rushed her to Maui Memorial Hospital. She was released from MCCC custody on May 15th. Despite the family’s hopes and prayers during a week in the hospital, she did not wake up due to significant brain damage. The family then made the painful decision to remove her from life support on May 19th.
In response to this tragedy, Kamalei De Lima created a GoFundMe campaign on May 21st, 2024, titled "IN LOVING MEMORY of ARTRINA DE LIMA." The goal is to raise $50,000 to cover medical expenses, funeral costs, and the care of her underage children. As of now, $250 has been raised from four donations.
"Aloha Family & Friends, we humbly ask for your kokua during these challenging times so my family and I may lay my beautiful mother to rest," Kamalei wrote. "We are preparing for medical expenses, funeral costs, and caring for her two underage children. Please, if you are willing and able, we ask for your support during these challenging times. Mahalo & God Bless you All ❤️."
Kamalei also expressed gratitude for the community’s support, no matter how big or small. This fundraising effort reflects a child’s desire to honor their mother and support their siblings in the face of an overwhelming loss.
