The late Annie Kris was a beloved figure from the Torres Strait. Known for her dedication as a nurse, Annie nurtured her community for over 40 years through the Queensland Health system. Tragically, she passed away on May 27th, 2024, at Cairns Base Hospital after battling cancer.
Annie’s family, led by Mick Bani, has organized a GoFundMe campaign to raise $15,000 to cover the costs of returning her to her final resting place in the Torres Strait. The funds will help with airfares, charter flights, boat fuel, food, accommodation, and other funeral expenses. Mick Bani emphasized Annie’s role as a matriarch who dedicated her life to caring for the young and elderly, making her loss deeply felt by the community.
Charles L. Thompson and SooRay BaniMabuyag Notice Board also shared their thoughts on Facebook. SooRay expressed, "Kulaiza ngay lak mina koeyma apasin. I’m sharing on behalf of the Kris family. With their blessing and permission, we’re hoping to raise funds to allow us to accompany our dearly beloved mother, grandmother & Sister to her final resting place. Any donation big or small will be greatly appreciated. Koeyma eso (thank you)."
Annie’s commitment to her community extended beyond her professional life. Even after her retirement in September 2023, she continued to serve while undergoing cancer treatment. Her selflessness and dedication left a lasting impact, making her a true healer and a vital presence in her community.
The community’s support in this fundraising effort reflects the deep gratitude and respect they have for Annie Kris, ensuring she is honored and remembered for her invaluable contributions.
