Steven A. Cornett, 65, Remembered After Early Morning Interstate 74 Work Zone Crash In Champaign County

Steven A. Cornett, a 65-year-old former Chief of Police of the Tilton Police Department, died early Wednesday while working with a road construction crew along Interstate 74 in Champaign County.

The incident happened near mile marker 180 during ongoing interstate interchange reconstruction work, and responders pronounced Cornett deceased at the scene at approximately 4:45 a.m.

The Champaign County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Cornett suffered life-ending blunt force injuries.

Cornett served the Tilton Police Department from 1984 until retirement in 2017, became Chief of Police in 2010, and earned respect for steady leadership and public service.

After retirement, Cornett continued serving the community through roadway construction work.

Illinois transportation officials shared condolences and urged drivers to stay alert and reduce speed near highway work areas.

The Illinois State Police and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the circumstances.
