Khalid Abdi, 26, died after an incident outside an Eid prayer service at the Canterbury Park Expo Center in Shakopee on Wednesday morning, May 27, 2026.

Police said officers responded around 9:55 a.m., and emergency crews took Abdi to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where Abdi later died from injuries.

Hundreds had gathered for prayers marking the Islamic holiday, and the loss deeply affected Somali and Muslim communities across Minnesota.

By Wednesday afternoon, authorities had announced no arrests and continued asking witnesses or anyone with details to contact Shakopee police.

Friends, coworkers, and community members remembered Abdi as a respected community leader who supported labor groups, local programs, and people facing hard times.

Loved ones also shared concern for Abdi’s growing family, including a pregnant spouse, as a fundraising campaign began to help with funeral costs and family support.

Details regarding memorial services will be announced later, and the family will share obituary and funeral service information soon.
