Gene Bartnes and 3-Year-Old Koltyn Tragically Found Dead in Holmesville Township, MN in Suspected Murder-Suicide

Holmesville Township was struck by an unfathomable tragedy on March 30, 2026, when Gene Bartnes and his young son, Koltyn, were found dead in their home.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:30 p.m. after a concerned relative went to check on Bartnes, who had not arrived for work.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered Bartnes with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Nearby, little Koltyn was also found dead from a gunshot wound. The community, known for its peaceful and remote nature, was left stunned by the events that transpired behind closed doors.

Koltyn's mother, Kristi Frazier, confirmed the identities of both victims and expressed her belief that this was a case of murder-suicide. She shared with authorities that Bartnes had left behind a note, adding to the complexity and sadness of the situation.

As investigators from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension work to piece together the events leading up to the tragic deaths, the community has rallied around the grieving family.

While the investigation continues, the overwhelming sadness of losing such a young life has deeply affected friends and neighbors alike.

"Prayers for the family in this difficult time," one community member posted, encapsulating the collective sorrow that has gripped the area.

Details regarding memorial services are still pending, but the memory of Gene and Koltyn will forever resonate in the hearts of all who knew them.
