William (Bill) Zapotechne Sr., known for his boundless love and kindness, passed away on June 11, 2024, after a lengthy battle with cancer. His passing has left a significant void in the lives of his family and the many people he touched throughout his life.
Bill spent the last ten years living in Austin, Texas, with his wife of 45 years, Norma (Zehnder) Zapotechne. Before moving to Austin, Bill and Norma lived in Oberlin, Ohio, where they raised their eight children over two decades. Bill originally hailed from Cleveland, Ohio, where he grew up with his three brothers, Steve, David, and Dan Zapotechne.
Tamara Zapotechne-Kelley, one of Bill’s daughters, has organized a GoFundMe campaign to honor his life and kindness. She shared that Bill passed away in the early hours of June 11, surrounded by family, both in person and through technology, while listening to his favorite music. The fundraiser aims to raise $5,000 to honor Bill’s memory, with the funds going towards memorial expenses. As of now, $100 has been raised by Alana Kelley, the first donor.
Bill’s children remember him as a passionate advocate for youth, a creator of spaces for self-expression, confidence, forgiveness, and radical kindness. His teachings and the way he lived his life emphasized the power and necessity of love. Bill is survived by his wife Norma, and their children Jessie, William Jr., Tammy, Joey, Jordan, Jonn, Micah, and Abby, along with many grandchildren.
On Facebook, Tammy Zapo shared her thoughts on this first Father’s Day without Bill, inviting friends and family to share their memories of him. "Thinking of Dad today, this first Father’s Day without him. He loved endlessly. Please share here any of the numerous memories you have of Bill," she wrote, reflecting the profound impact he had on those around him.
Bill’s passing marks the end of a life filled with love, advocacy, and kindness, leaving behind a legacy that his family and community will cherish forever.
