The late Tobey Pelzer was a beloved member of the Cypress community. His passing has left a deep void among his family, friends, and everyone who knew him. Tobey, who was born with Spina Bifida, was a remarkable individual who never let his condition define him. He had a sharp mind, a love for music, and a dream of becoming a politician. Despite the challenges he faced, Tobey was actively involved in his school band, thanks to a special ramp built for him to access the Marimba.
Tobey contracted sepsis and developed blood clots in his paralyzed legs, which led to his hospitalization in the ICU on Wednesday, May 29. Unfortunately, the infection was too severe, and he passed away at 10:52 PM on Friday, May 31, at the age of 27.
Angel K. Treviño, a friend from camp, shared his sorrow on Facebook: "R.I.P Tobey Pelzer, another camp friend gone." Kristy Owens expressed her disbelief and sadness, lamenting the loss of yet another member of the CTLB family. Whitney Hawkins confirmed the timing of Tobey’s passing, stating, "Last night at 10:52 pm. I’ve been following on his mom’s page." Erica Jones, who also followed updates from Tobey’s mother, confirmed the sepsis diagnosis but was unsure of the exact cause.
In response to this tragedy, Karen Crandon, a music therapist who had worked with Tobey for the past 15 years, organized a fundraiser to help cover the costs of his cremation and memorial. Karen described Tobey as sweet, funny, and intelligent, and she recounted their shared musical endeavors, including writing the song "You Are My God," which will feature on her upcoming Christian music CD.
The fundraiser, titled "Support for Tobey’s Final Journey," aims to raise $5,000. As of today, it has garnered $895 from 11 donations, with Karen Crandon herself contributing the top donation of $250. Despite the financial challenges and the lack of life insurance, the community is rallying to support Tobey’s family during this difficult time.
Tobey’s mother, Jennifer, a single mom and teacher, wishes to bring her son’s remains home to be with the family. Karen Crandon initiated the fundraiser on Jennifer’s behalf, acknowledging Jennifer’s pride and reluctance to ask for help. Every contribution, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated to help lay Tobey to rest with the dignity and honor he deserves.
