The late Steve "Tookey" Shelley, from Wood-Ridge, NJ, passed away suddenly on the evening of May 31st, 2024. The community and his family are grappling with his unexpected loss, leaving them in deep sorrow and unprepared for the suddenness of his passing.
Steve Shelley, affectionately known as Tookey, was a cherished father to three children, a sibling, an uncle to many, a cousin, a nephew, and a best friend to numerous individuals. Born and raised on 135th Street in Harlem, NY, Tookey later moved to NJ, where he spent many of his best years with his best friend, Connie, raising a family. Known for his vibrant personality, Tookey was the life of every event, sharing countless stories and always ready with a joke. He had a passion for capturing memories, often seen with his tripod in hand, documenting everything from casual walks to significant celebrations. Tookey loved the outdoors, enjoying activities like hiking and canoeing, and most of all, he cherished his time with family.
Tookey was a reliable and loving person who endured his struggles with great strength. However, on May 31st, the Lord called him home, ending his long fight. His sudden departure has left his closest family and friends in a state of shock, drastically altering their lives in just a short time.
In the wake of his passing, Melissa Hotaling, a family member, has organized a fundraiser to support Tookey’s memorial and assist his family during this difficult time. The goal is to raise $11,000, but so far, only $150 has been collected through two donations. The family is seeking any possible assistance to reach their goal and provide the necessary support for Tookey’s children and to honor his memory.
Melissa expressed the collective grief of the family, stating, "Our world was shattered by the sudden loss of Steve ‘Tookey’ Shelley." The family requests that everyone holds onto the best memories of Tookey, celebrates life as he did, and keeps his children in their prayers. They invite supporters to sip a Corona, enjoy the outdoors, and capture life’s moments in honor of Tookey’s spirit.
The Shelley’s and Hotaling family extend their gratitude to all who read, share, and donate to the fundraiser, emphasizing the importance of community support in times of unexpected loss.
