The late Maureen Smith, from Perth, Scotland, passed away at the end of March 2024 after a courageous four-year battle with cancer. Her final days were spent at the Cornhill MacMillan Centre, a specialist palliative care unit where she received compassionate care from a dedicated team.
Louise Johnston, Maureen’s granddaughter, is organizing a fundraiser in her memory. Maureen’s care at Cornhill MacMillan Centre left a lasting impression on her family, who were profoundly grateful for the support and comfort provided by the staff during a difficult time.
In honor of her grandmother and to give back to the Centre that supported them, Louise and her sister, along with three friends, plan to climb Ben Nevis on August 3, 2024. The fundraiser, "Climb for Cornhill," aims to raise £500 to support various services at the Centre, including bereavement and family support, volunteer transport services, complementary therapies, hairdressing, and funding specific projects to improve patient comfort and equipment.
Maureen often reminisced about a cherished family holiday to Fort William, where the highlight was the Nevis Range Mountain Gondola. This memory has inspired Louise and her team to undertake the climb, celebrating her grandmother’s life while making a meaningful difference for others in need.
The fundraiser has so far raised £130 from nine donations, with contributions from individuals like William Garvie, Colin Smith, Kerry Smith, Kirsten Taylor, and Stacey Johnston. Louise’s heartfelt appeal underscores the importance of community support in times of grief and the profound impact of compassionate care.
