Mario Garcia, a beloved member of the Hobbs community, passed away on May 16th, 2024, after a courageous battle with stage 4 colon cancer. His wife, Chyree Garcia, has organized a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the medical expenses and funeral costs, as Mario’s illness and the subsequent treatments have placed a significant financial burden on the family.
Mario was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer on October 19th, 2023, shortly after the birth of his granddaughter. Despite undergoing 12 sessions of chemotherapy, his condition worsened, leading to multiple hospitalizations. In late April 2024, Mario experienced severe chest pains and pancreatitis, necessitating emergency airlifts to Amarillo, Texas, due to the lack of available beds closer to his doctor in Lubbock.
Throughout his treatment, Mario faced numerous complications, including severe infections and organ failure. His wife Chyree detailed their struggle in a heartfelt message on the fundraising page, explaining how Mario’s health deteriorated rapidly in his final days. On May 7th, Mario was readmitted to the hospital with jaundice and blood in his urine. Despite multiple procedures to alleviate his symptoms, he succumbed to septic shock and multiple organ failure on May 16th.
Bailey Maestas shared his sorrow on Facebook, saying, "Hi everyone, I am devastated to say that Mario unfortunately passed on May 16th. Thank you for all of the love, prayers, and support that has been given to Mario’s family. All we can do is carry him in our hearts and remember that he is healed from his battle and he is at peace with God. May we all remember him in his best light, with his funny personality and kind heart."
The GoFundMe campaign has raised $950 so far, with donations from community members like Charles Cunningham and Aysh Gauna. The goal is to reach $50,000 to cover the extensive medical and funeral expenses.
Chyree’s poignant words capture the essence of Mario’s character and the depth of their loss: "If you knew Mario, you’d know that he loved everyone. He was the kind of man to give the shirt off of his back to anyone. He was a hardworking, funny, caring Christian man. He loved his family more than life, and loved all of his friends and coworkers."
The community continues to rally around the Garcia family, offering prayers and support during this difficult time. Pat Knapp expressed his condolences, saying, "Prayers for Chyree and all of the family."
Mario Garcia’s passing is a profound loss for his family and the Hobbs community. His memory lives on through the love and support of those who knew him, and through the efforts of those helping to ease the financial burden left behind.
