The late Ashley Byrd was from Longview, Washington. She passed away on May 20, 2024, after a courageous seven-year battle with lymphoma, exactly one month after her 37th birthday. Ashley was a beloved mother of two young boys, Julius (16) and Jalyn (13), who were her everything.
Ashley fought tirelessly against cancer, undergoing numerous treatments including chemotherapy, stem cell transplant, T-cell transplant, radiation, and natural remedies. Despite her relentless efforts and the support of her community, the cancer ultimately took her life. Her battle was marked by significant suffering, including losing her hair, struggling to swallow due to a damaged mucous membrane, severe weight loss, and eventually losing her ability to walk and breathe.
Her passing is even more poignant as the family had already experienced the loss of their mother just nine months earlier. Ashley’s immune system weakened during this period, causing the cancer to grow aggressively in her lungs. As her condition deteriorated, her partner Chris Byrd took leave from his job to provide her with 24-hour care, depleting their savings.
Ashley did not have life insurance because she was diagnosed with cancer at the young age of 29. Now, Chris and her sons are facing financial difficulties, and they need the community’s help. Amanda Manning and Angileah Miner have organized a fundraiser on GoFundMe to honor Ashley and cover her final expenses. As of now, they have raised $120 of their $5,000 goal.
Amanda Manning, who organized the fundraiser, shared her grief, saying, "It is with a heavy heart that I write this, as I never imagined losing a younger sibling. My little sister, Ashley Byrd, fought cancer for 7 long years, and ultimately lost her battle on May 20th."
Ashley was known for her strong soul and fiery spirit. She was always honest and authentically herself, creating a safe space for others to be vulnerable. Despite not having much to give, she offered her most valuable commodity—her time—helping friends and family in need. Her generosity and unwavering support made her a cherished friend and confidant.
The community has been a vital source of support throughout Ashley’s journey, lifting her spirits and providing much-needed encouragement. Now, in the wake of her passing, they continue to rally around her family. Amanda Manning expressed gratitude for the community’s kindness, stating, "Know that your support means everything to us as we navigate this painful time. Although we were anticipating her passing, nothing has prepared us for this immense feeling of great loss, a young life cut short."
A service to honor Ashley is being planned at Columbia Funeral Home in Longview, WA, on June 1, 2024, followed by a potluck at Riverside Park. The family is requesting donations in lieu of flowers to cover cremation costs, funeral home services, and household bills for Chris and the boys.
Kami Whitmire also shared her thoughts on Facebook, urging support for the fundraiser and highlighting the profound loss felt by those who knew and loved Ashley.
The fundraiser, organized by Amanda Manning and Angileah Miner, aims to ensure Ashley’s final wishes are honored and to provide some financial stability for her family during this difficult time.
