Amaya Patterson, a vibrant 23-year-old from Cumberland, Maryland, passed away on May 22 due to complications from a brain injury. Amaya’s medical journey began on February 13 with an AVM bleed and a subsequent stroke, which led to numerous surgeries and hospital stays. Despite her positive attitude and the support of her family, including her mother, brothers, and Aunt Mickey, Amaya’s condition deteriorated, culminating in cardiac arrest and a final surgery that confirmed she had no brain activity.
Amaya was known for her sweet smile and sassy, witty personality. She brought joy to those around her and left behind many cherished memories. Her family is now faced with the unexpected and significant costs of her medical care and funeral services. To honor Amaya’s memory and give her the farewell she deserves, her aunt, Michelle Patterson Prieto, has organized a GoFundMe campaign. The campaign has raised $525 of its $10,000 goal, with contributions from friends and family who are devastated by the loss.
The community has rallied around Amaya’s family, offering prayers and support. Linda Trent McDaniel expressed, "Prayers for the family and friends," while Lisa Martin shared, "I’m so terribly sorry for your loss." Many others, including Teresa Warren and Leslie J Darga, have sent their condolences and prayers, showing the impact Amaya had on those who knew her.
Michelle Patterson Prieto, in her heartfelt message on the GoFundMe page, expressed the family’s gratitude for the moments they shared with Amaya and the need for financial support to cover the funeral expenses. She also encouraged acts of kindness in Amaya’s memory, such as registering as an organ donor.
The outpouring of support on social media reflects the love and loss felt by all who knew Amaya. Royale Funky Junque posted, "Our fellow sparkle chick Michelle P. suddenly lost her niece due to a brain injury and their entire family is devastated! Please pray for her and her family and if able to do so please consider making a donation to the go fund me."
Amaya’s story is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the strength of community in times of grief.
