Portland Community Mourns Marlene McNeill After Fatal Monday Morning Incident Inside Shalom House
Marlene McNeill, 40, of Gorham, died after an incident just before 10 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 2026, inside Shalom House at 503 Woodford Street near Rosemont Avenue in Portland, Maine.
Police said the incident happened in a back hallway of the residential facility, which supports adults living with mental illness and provides daily services.
Emergency responders brought McNeill to MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in critical condition, and medical teams worked to save McNeill’s life before McNeill later died.
Multiple residents left the building while emergency crews secured the scene, and some received help from a fire department ladder truck due to safety concerns during the response.
Police arrested Armando Javier Negrete, 40, at the scene without incident and took Negrete to Cumberland County Jail as authorities continued their investigation.
Residents, staff, and the wider Portland community now mourn McNeill while officials work to learn what led to the fatal encounter.
