John Kanelakos, 59, Remembered After Rural Cowley County Watershed Search Near Silverdale Ends In Loss
John Kanelakos, 59, was found deceased on May 6, 2026, after an overnight search in a rural watershed east of Silverdale in Cowley County, Kansas.
A property owner first noticed a pickup truck parked nearby with its engine still running and no driver in sight.
Deputies arrived around 2:45 a.m. and searched the dark rural area, where they later found boots near the water.
Teams used boats, search dogs, mounted units, and divers as they worked through the night and morning.
Around 10:30 a.m., divers located Kanelakos in the watershed, and officials confirmed the passing at the scene.
Investigators said early information suggests Kanelakos may have entered the water while trying to rescue a calf, though officials have not confirmed that detail.
An autopsy will determine the exact cause, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Memorial service details will be announced later by family members.
