Henrico Resident Christopher L. Yates, 74, Remembered After Fatal Pedestrian Crash Near Staples Mill Road On Friday Evening
Christopher L. Yates, 74, of Henrico, Virginia, died after an SUV struck the pedestrian near Staples Mill Road and Libbie Mill East Boulevard at about 5 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026.
Henrico County Police said Yates stood with a pedestrian gathering in the area before stepping into the roadway near the Libbie Mill shopping district.
Emergency crews responded, and officials pronounced Yates deceased at the scene.
The SUV driver stayed at the location, spoke with investigators, and cooperated with the ongoing review.
Authorities closed all eastbound lanes of Staples Mill Road between Bethlehem Road and Libbie Lake South Street while the Henrico Police Crash Team examined the scene.
County officials noted this was Henrico’s third fatal pedestrian crash of 2026, following the losses of 43-year-old Torianno Lakeith Callahan and 88-year-old Dominic Lisanti.
Memorial and funeral service details will be announced later by family members.
