The late Zechariah Malik Collazo, known to many as Lugu, tragically passed away in San Diego County. He was only 26 years old, having celebrated his birthday on June 2nd. Zechariah had been battling lupus and was not receiving the adequate care he needed at Donovan Correctional Facility. Despite his resilience, positivity, and motivation, his health deteriorated, and he was taken from his loved ones just two months before his expected release.
Zechariah’s mother, Josephine Williams, is now organizing a fundraiser to honor his memory and support his family during this difficult time. She described her son as talented, educated, and strong-hearted, with many goals and dreams he was ready to pursue. Unfortunately, his life was cut short, and his family is now seeking donations to cover funeral expenses and other needs.
In a heartfelt plea, Josephine shared, "Hello everyone, my name is Josephine Williams, the mother of Zechariah Malik Collazo. Also known as Lugu by many. He loved me, his wife Lyric, his family, and rapping. He had less than two more months before coming home, and unfortunately, was taken away from us. Zechariah had lupus, and was not getting the proper care he needed at Donovan in San Diego County. He was very resilient, positive, motivated, talented, educated, strong-hearted, and ready to start a new and better life. He had plenty of goals and dreams ready to make come true, and now that’s gone. We’re asking for your donations and help. Anything helps, thank you. Forever Zechariah Malik Collazo’s World."
The fundraiser, titled "Honoring The Life of Zechariah Malik Collazo," aims to raise $15,000. So far, it has yet to receive any donations, but the family remains hopeful that the community will come together to support them during this challenging time.
On Facebook, Johnerra Wright, along with Desiree Moore, expressed their support, urging friends and family to contribute. Johnerra wrote, "Hey everybody, if y’all can donate anything, anything at all it’ll be very appreciated. Forever Zechariah Malik Collazo’s World #lupussucks #JusticeforZechariahMalikCollazo."
The community’s response to this call for help highlights the collective grief and the desire to support one another in times of sorrow. Zechariah’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by those with chronic illnesses and the impact of inadequate healthcare in correctional facilities.
