The late William "The Don" McCabe was from Wales. The community is mourning his sudden death and rallying to ensure he gets a proper send-off. William’s best friend of 20 years, Deacon Greening, has organized a fundraiser to cover the funeral expenses, raising £1,560 of the £4,000 goal so far. Deacon has also offered to collect cash donations for those who prefer not to use the GoFundMe page.
William had a challenging start in life, losing both parents at the age of 11. He and his younger brother David moved from Glasgow to Wales to live with their uncle. Despite the hardships, William showed promise in various fields, excelling in art, boxing, carpentry, and cooking. However, he struggled with mental health issues and instability in his housing situation.
Deacon fondly recalls their school days at Tonypandy Comprehensive School and how William was like a brother to him. William’s life took many turns, including a period in foster care and a move to Bristol. Despite these struggles, he always showed resilience and a desire to find a place to call home.
William’s mental health deteriorated further after losing a close friend on New Year’s Day this year. On the night of his death, William had correctly predicted the outcome of the Fury vs. Usyk heavyweight fight, joyfully sharing a voice note with his friends. Tragically, he passed away in his sleep shortly after.
Deacon’s heartfelt tribute on the fundraiser page highlights William’s generosity and the deep love he had for his friends and family. The community’s support has been overwhelming, with many expressing their condolences and willingness to help. Deacon and others plan to lay flowers where William died and have organized a balloon release in his honor.
"RIP my best friend. You are out of pain and suffering now and finally reunited with your mother and father. We love you, Donny Boy! Please send strength to us all," Deacon wrote, encapsulating the collective grief and love felt by those who knew William.
George Jones, another friend, echoed these sentiments: "RIP don bro." Ben Cook urged friends to show their love by contributing to the flower arrangements.
William’s story is a poignant reminder of the importance of community support in times of loss and the enduring impact of a life filled with both struggle and kindness.
