The late Stephen B. Johnson III, a 19-year-old from Galloway Township, tragically lost his life in a motor vehicle accident on June 7th, 2024. The accident occurred at approximately 1:30 AM on West White Horse Pike near West Jimmie Leeds Road. Stephen was riding an electric scooter when he was struck by a Toyota Rav 4 operated by Edith Ramirez-Masedas. The impact threw Stephen into the roadway, where he was subsequently struck by an Acura TLX driven by Manuel Rodriguez of Egg Harbor Township.
Stephen, a full-time college student studying health science, was known for his positive outlook and contagious laughter. He worked at Starbucks in Galloway and had dreams of producing music. His sudden death has left a significant void in the lives of his family, friends, and community.
David Wallace shared on Facebook, "What’s sad is this is my daughter’s boyfriend and it happened less than 300ft from our house. It was supposed to be a beautiful day today as they were to go to prom tonight together." Many community members echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the tragedy of the loss, especially on what was meant to be a celebratory day.
Amanda N. Morales commented, "Honestly, we need to change the law so that you can walk AGAINST traffic. You should be able to ride your bike against it too. When a car is coming behind you, you can’t see them swerving or going into the shoulder/bike lane."
Elizabeth Mason Vivona added, "I am so tired of seeing people doing everything but paying attention to the road nowadays. Talking on their cell phones, ignoring and not giving anyone the right of way. Everyone is in a big hurry, speed kills!"
A fundraiser organized by Sandra Prewitt, titled "Support for Stephen’s Final Goodbye," has been set up to help cover the costs of Stephen’s funeral. As of today, $275 of the $6,000 goal has been raised. Sandra described Stephen as a "ray of sunshine" with a love for music and people. She emphasized the importance of laying Stephen to rest and honoring his memory.
Meredith Smisek reflected, "While it may be illegal to drive a scooter on the road, I’m sure many people here did things as teenagers that were not the safest. I’m sure whoever hit him will live with this guilt forever. Sad all around and hopefully a reminder to all of us."
The community continues to rally around Stephen’s family, offering condolences and support during this devastating time. Lynn Rapetti shared advice from her father, "This is a vehicle, but it is as much of a deadly weapon as it is a form of privileged transportation, think of it as if you are operating a mini tank."
The accident remains under investigation by Sergeant First Class Kevin Welsh and Officer Kaitlyn Reyes of the Galloway Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Officer Reyes at 609-652-3705 extension 5125.
