On June 28, 2024, the Cannon Falls community was struck by tragedy when Sam Johnson, aged 35, lost her life in a car accident. Sam, a beloved wife, stepmother, and friend, left behind a legacy of warmth and kindness that deeply impacted everyone who knew her.
Sam and her husband Ricky were married on September 3, 2023, and were known for their deep love and happiness. Sam was a cherished stepmother to Zoe and Mya, always brightening their lives with her smile and humor. Her friend, Trudy Jean, shared heartfelt memories on Facebook, recounting their high school days, late-night cruises, and numerous adventures.
"Sam, you were one of a kind and didn’t care what people thought of you; you just wanted to live your life how you wanted to. I will never forget our many memories," Trudy wrote. "I wish this wasn’t real, but knowing you’re with mom gives me some comfort. I’ll love you forever, Sam."
The community has rallied to support Ricky during this difficult time. A GoFundMe campaign, organized by Sky Johnson, aims to raise $20,000 to cover funeral expenses and help Ricky manage his living costs without Sam’s additional income. The fundraiser has so far raised $70 from two donations.
"Due to the loss of the additional income from his wife, we would like to set up a GoFundMe for our brother Ricky to help cover the funeral expenses and to help cover his house payments and living expenses," Sky Johnson explained.
Friends and family expressed their condolences and shared their grief on social media. Leslie Carpenter, Karen Hill, and Vivian Lynne Gardner were among many who offered hugs and prayers to Trudy. Debbie Zempel Rand reminisced about Sam, saying, "Always remember you hanging out with and talking about Sam. Such a sad thing and I’m so sorry, my Trudy. I’m here for you as always."
The outpouring of support highlights the deep impact Sam had on those around her. Her loss is felt profoundly by her family, friends, and the broader community.
