The late Sally Anne Caunter was from Barkston & Syston. The community and her family are mourning her loss and remembering the profound impact she had on many lives. Sally Anne bravely fought cancer for over five years, showing unwavering strength and courage. She passed away on Friday, June 14th, 2014.
Sally Anne served as the beloved headteacher at Barkston & Syston CE Primary School for 15 years. Her role went far beyond administrative duties; she was the heart and soul of the school, creating a nurturing and compassionate environment that touched the lives of countless children and their families. She was dedicated to ensuring not only the academic success of her students but also their happiness and well-being.
Ruth Clements, a friend, and colleague, shared heartfelt memories on Facebook, emphasizing the profound impact Sally Anne had on her children’s early education. "Sally Anne was not just a head teacher; she was a friend who had a profound impact on my children’s early education. She created a school environment filled with love and compassion," Ruth wrote.
Ruth recalled visiting Sally Anne one last time after learning she had only a week left to live. They hugged, cried, and reminisced about their shared experiences, including numerous fundraising events at the school. Sally Anne’s dedication to her students and her community was evident even in her final days.
In memory of Sally Anne, Ruth Clements has organized a fundraiser to install a memorial bench at Barkston & Syston Cricket Club. The goal is to raise £1,450 for the bench, which will be a place where family, friends, former students, and colleagues can gather to honor and remember Sally Anne’s remarkable life. So far, the fundraiser has received £80 in donations from three supporters, including Paul Bennett and Ruth herself.
Ruth’s Facebook post has garnered support and suggestions, with Rebecca Mezzo proposing to add the fundraiser to the Barkston Village group to increase visibility and potentially surpass the target amount.
Sally Anne Caunter’s legacy of love, dedication, and compassion will continue to inspire those who knew her. The memorial bench will serve as a lasting tribute to her incredible contributions to the community and the lives she touched. "Sleep tight Sally Anne and thank you for simply being you," Ruth Clements wrote, capturing the sentiments of many who were fortunate to have known Sally Anne.
