Ryan Smith of Eugene, Oregon, has tragically reached the end of his courageous battle with cancer. His wife, Jerica Smith, shared this heartbreaking news and is now seeking support for their family through a GoFundMe campaign.
Ryan’s journey was a testament to resilience and determination. Diagnosed with cancer for the fifth time in the summer of 2022, this time with a tumor on his spine, Ryan faced numerous challenges. Despite the grim prognosis and the inability to pursue surgical or radiation treatments, Ryan’s spirit remained unbroken. He continued working tirelessly at his dream job with a local HVAC company until January 2023, when he was advised to spend his remaining time with loved ones.
Jerica has been Ryan’s devoted caregiver, juggling the demands of homeschooling their four children while ensuring Ryan’s comfort. The family’s resources were depleted, and Jerica turned to the community for support to cover funeral expenses and future needs for their children. The GoFundMe campaign aims to raise $200,000, but as of now, only $320 has been collected from four donations.
Jerica’s heartfelt plea describes the severity of Ryan’s condition, including the development of a Kennedy Terminal Ulcer and paralysis caused by the spinal cancer. She reflects on the challenges they’ve faced and their unwavering commitment to each other and their family. Jerica recently secured Ryan’s burial plot and is determined to give him a dignified farewell.
The community has rallied around the Smith family, expressing their condolences and offering support. Susan Kunkle shared on Facebook, "So sorry you have gone through so much at your young age. You are in my thoughts and prayers always." Angelica Rose added, "Jerica, you are incredible. I’m so grateful my cousin found such an amazing woman to partner with in life. You have taken such amazing care of Ryan and your babies."
Ryan’s passion for tinkering, classic cars, and 3D printing was well-known. He transformed broken items into functional masterpieces and recently completed the interior of his 1966 Impala. Even as his physical abilities declined, Ryan continued to create and provide for his family, leaving behind personalized 3D-printed gifts.
Jerica’s love and gratitude for Ryan are evident in her words: "After 15 remarkable years with Ryan, life will never be the same, but the memories and love we shared will always be cherished. I am so grateful to have known and loved him, and his children will miss him dearly."
The GoFundMe campaign, organized by Jerica, seeks to ensure Ryan’s final journey is as smooth as possible and to support the family’s future. Donations can also be made through Venmo and CashApp, though only contributions made on GoFundMe are protected by their Giving Guarantee.
Jerica and the Smith family are holding onto the love and kindness shared by their community during this difficult time. Ryan’s unwavering strength and dedication to his family will forever be remembered.
