The late Rey Hernandez from Presque Isle, Maine, tragically passed away this morning at the young age of 33. His sister, Belen Hernandez, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, revealing that Rey had been fighting for his life late last night before ultimately losing his battle.
The Hernandez family is now grappling with both the emotional and financial challenges brought on by Rey’s sudden death. To help cover the funeral expenses, Belen Dougherty, Rey’s sister, has organized a GoFundMe campaign titled "Support for Rey Hernandez’s Final Journey." The fundraiser aims to raise $2,700, of which $450 has already been donated by friends and supporters.
Rey leaves behind two sons, two sisters, and a brother, as well as numerous friends who were considered extended family. Belen wrote on the GoFundMe page, "Rey was loved by so many, he was witty, funny, kind, friendly, a lover, and someone down for his family and friends. He was also sad and struggled with things he didn’t get to overcome."
The community has shown an outpouring of support for the Hernandez family. Nicole Cote expressed her condolences, "So sorry for your loss. Praying for you all." Kelly O’Mara and Becca Barajas also shared their sympathies, with Becca sending a "bigggg hug all the way from Alaska."
Corina DeLuca, who donated $150, commented, "Keeping you in my thoughts and so close to my heart." Other friends and family members, including Taylor LeBlanc, LaNiece Dampf Sirois, and Wanda Stubbs, have also shared their heartfelt messages and condolences.
The fundraiser is a testament to the love and support surrounding Rey and his family during this difficult time. As Belen mentioned, "With immense humbleness, my family is asking for help to put his remains to rest. We appreciate any help and shares."
Rey Hernandez’s passing has left a void in the lives of those who knew him, but the collective efforts to support his final journey highlight the strength and compassion of the community.
