Rebecca Baker, fondly known as Bek, is facing an unimaginable battle. At just 43 years old, she has been diagnosed with an aggressive grade 4 brain tumour and is in her last stages of life. This heartbreaking news has devastated her and her family, leaving them struggling emotionally and financially.
Rebecca’s niece, Tayla Mason, has organized a GoFundMe campaign to help ease the financial burden during this challenging time. The fundraiser aims to cover the costs of daily ferry rides for Rebecca’s husband, who needs to travel to and from the hospital, as well as potential accommodation expenses, medication, and future funeral arrangements.
In a heartfelt message on the GoFundMe page, Tayla explains the severity of the situation: "My aunty Rebecca is not able to walk anymore, remember things, or even comprehend things. Townsville hospital has done everything they can, but surgery is unsuccessful, and the tumour is inoperable. Radiotherapy is not an option as it will cause her brain to bleed, leading to her passing away immediately."
The financial strain on Rebecca’s family is immense, as her husband spends $38 each way on ferry rides to visit her, totaling $76 daily. This cost is untenable for the family, and they are unable to afford a daily $200 fee to take the car across the water.
The community has shown support, with several donations coming in. Notable contributions include $500 from Stingray Shade & Vinyl, $50 from Andii Wilson, and smaller amounts from others who are touched by Rebecca’s story. Charles L. Thompson and Victoria Brown are among those who have shared and supported the campaign on Facebook, urging others to donate or spread the word.
Despite the overwhelming circumstances, Tayla remains hopeful and grateful for any support they receive. "Please share or donate," she pleads, hoping to reach those who can help alleviate the family’s burden.
Rebecca’s story is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the power of community support in times of need. The fundraiser not only seeks financial help but also stands as a testament to the love and care Rebecca’s family and friends have for her.
