The late Peter David Butkus was from Morgan City. His family and community are grappling with the loss and working to gather the funds needed for his cremation. Peter Butkus, his son, has organized a GoFundMe campaign in memory of his father, a war veteran who fought bravely in Vietnam and later succumbed to Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) after a three-year battle.
Peter David Butkus, affectionately known as Pete, passed away peacefully at home on the afternoon of June 25th, surrounded by his loved ones. Remembered for his service and sense of humor, Pete’s legacy includes the countless jokes he shared and the joy he brought to those around him. His son, Peter Brandon Butkus, reminisces about the times they spent fishing together, a bonding activity that shaped his upbringing and contributed to the man he is today.
The GoFundMe campaign, "In Loving Memory of Peter David Butkus-Father and Hero," aims to raise $1,600 to cover the costs of Pete’s cremation. As of now, the fundraiser has collected $950 from three generous donors. Christine Bosshamer contributed $500, Luke Bergeron donated $400, and Amanda Fields added $50 to the cause.
Felicia Jae Mahler, a supporter on Facebook, urged others to donate, stating, "If y’all can donate, please do. Prayers also welcomed and more than appreciated." This sentiment echoes the family’s deep appreciation for both financial and emotional support during this difficult time.
Peter Brandon Butkus highlighted his father’s influence on his life, saying, "He is the reason I am the successful man I am today." Despite the financial challenges, the family is committed to honoring Pete’s memory and ensuring his final wishes are fulfilled.
The community’s support underscores the collective effort to provide a dignified farewell for a man who touched many lives with his kindness and humor.
