Monica Valladares-Duran passed away on August 20, 2023. Tragically, her friends were unaware of her passing until June 10, 2024, when they found out she had died. They had initially thought Monica was ignoring them due to the lack of communication from her family regarding her death.
On June 11, 2024, friends called Greenfield Cemetery in Uniondale, Long Island, at 9 a.m. to confirm her burial. One friend visited the cemetery that morning to verify that she was indeed there. They found Monica’s grave, but it lacked a tombstone.
In response, Monica’s friends, led by Myrikal Porter, have started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for a tombstone. The goal is to have it placed on her gravesite by August 20, 2024, marking one year since her passing. As of now, $60 has been raised out of a $1,500 goal, with donations from an anonymous supporter and Justin Curry.
Myrikal Porter expressed the deep sense of loss felt by Monica’s friends. "My friend Monica Valladares-Duran passed away August 20, 2023, her family did not inform anyone and since August we thought that she was ignoring us," she shared. The campaign aims to ensure that Monica’s resting place is properly marked, providing closure and honoring her memory.
Chikita Mendez, who went to school with Monica, shared her condolences, saying, "Wow, I went to school with her, talked to her, and hanged out with her a couple of times. My condolences." Delmy Pollack also expressed disbelief, stating, "I still can’t believe this, May God protect her son." Michael Blaxkson commented on the shocking situation, "Not knowing for a year is wild."
This fundraising effort highlights the community’s efforts to honor Monica and ensure her memory is preserved with dignity.
