Michelle Henry, a 25-year-old Black transgender woman, was a beloved figure in the San Francisco queer community. Tragically, on May 15, 2024, she was found strangled and stabbed to death by the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) after they responded to a report of a physical altercation on the 700 block of Post Street. Despite officers’ attempts to revive her, Michelle was pronounced dead at the scene. A female suspect has been detained and is awaiting trial.
Michelle was known for her involvement with the San Francisco LGBT Center’s youth program, where she was often described as a "ray of light" by the center’s Executive Director, Rebecca Rolfe. In an emotional funeral service announcement via Instagram, Mother Bar—a queer bar in San Francisco—acknowledged Michelle’s profound impact on the local LGBTQ+ community, stating, “The tapestry of who she was will continue to be woven through our words – written and spoken – for a lifetime.”
Her untimely death has deeply affected her family and the community. Winston Neo Henry, Michelle’s uncle, has organized a GoFundMe campaign titled "Support Michelle Henry’s Legacy" to honor her memory. He expressed his grief and determination to lay Michelle to rest and create a foundation in her honor. The fundraiser aims to collect $5,000, and Winston has assured that all funds will be used to support initiatives in her name.
Michelle’s death is a stark reminder of the violence that disproportionately affects transgender women of color. Tori Cooper, Human Rights Campaign Trans Justice Initiative Director, highlighted that Michelle is at least the 15th transgender or gender-expansive person to lose their life to fatal violence in 2024. This year alone has seen nearly 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced in state houses, with 33 signed into law.
The community has come together to mourn and remember Michelle. TransThrive shared their sorrow on Facebook, stating, "Our hearts are broken. We are mourning over the death of Michelle Henry, a beloved and dear client of TransThrive." Other friends and community members, like Reeshae McCray and Naya Harmon, posted heartfelt messages: "Rest in Paradise My Angel Michelle Henry."
As the community rallies to support Michelle’s legacy, her story underscores the urgent need to address and combat the violence faced by transgender individuals. The call for justice and equality continues as those who knew and loved Michelle strive to honor her memory and advocate for a safer world for all.
