The late Mel Mamula was from Southport, North Carolina. His sudden passing has left his wife, Toni DeLuca Mamula, and their family in shock and grief. Mel, who was Toni’s primary caregiver, died of a massive heart attack just days ago. Toni, who has been battling Multiple Sclerosis since the age of 17 and has been wheelchair-bound and legally blind in one eye for decades, is now facing an uncertain future without her husband.
Toni’s sister, Louise Maravich, has organized a fundraiser to help support Toni during this challenging time. The fundraiser aims to raise $25,000 to cover the costs of moving Toni into a long-term care facility and to pay off accumulated debts. As of now, $500 has been raised through a single donation from Susan Shears.
Toni’s story is one of resilience and dedication. Despite her debilitating condition, she pursued a career in education, becoming a teacher and later a principal at Quail Valley Elementary School. She also remained deeply involved with her church community and married Mel, who devoted his life to caring for her.
Mel’s sudden death has left Toni not only heartbroken but also fearful of the future. The fundraiser seeks to alleviate some of her financial burdens and ensure she receives the care she needs. Louise Maravich and the family hope the community will come together to support Toni, just as she has inspired and supported others throughout her life.
