The late Kiel McCoy, born on September 3, 2002, tragically passed away while living in Florence, Alabama. Kiel had recently enlisted in the US Army and was scheduled to begin Basic Training on July 7, 2024. His untimely death occurred on June 19, 2024, when he went swimming at Riverfront Park in Sheffield, Alabama. According to his mother, Angela McCoy, Kiel, who was not a strong swimmer, became disoriented and panicked after jumping off a bluff into the river. Despite his friend Brandon’s immediate attempt to rescue him, Kiel drowned.
Kiel spent most of his life in NE Indiana, attending Whitko and Whitley County Schools before graduating from Eagle Tech Academy in December 2021. He worked at Artistic Holiday Design and later at LSC Communications until mid-2023. Seeking new beginnings, Kiel moved to Florence, Alabama, on his 21st birthday to be with friends and start the next chapter of his life.
The family is now faced with the heartbreaking task of bringing Kiel home to Indiana. Angela McCoy has organized a GoFundMe campaign titled "Support Kiel’s Journey Home" to cover the unexpected expenses of his return and funeral arrangements. The goal is to raise $5,000, and Angela has expressed deep gratitude for any support received, stating, “Those of you who know me know I am the very last person to ask for help.”
A celebration of Kiel’s life is planned for Labor Day weekend. The family asks that instead of sending flowers or planting trees, people contribute to the GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs associated with Kiel’s passing.
The community has been invited to join in supporting the McCoy family during this difficult time, ensuring that Kiel is brought home and remembered for the joy and love he shared during his life.
