The late Kayla Bullock was from Barbados. The community and her family are struggling to prepare for her final journey home, so this news is devastating. At just 27 years old, Kayla’s life was a testament to extraordinary resilience in the face of relentless medical challenges. From early childhood, her journey was one of immense struggle and astounding bravery.
Kayla’s recent 35-day stay in Barbados showcased her unyielding spirit. Undergoing multiple surgeries and battling severe infections, Kayla’s strength inspired everyone around her. Despite her courageous fight, the illness that had shadowed her entire life ultimately claimed her.
The financial burden of seeking essential medical care on a different island has been overwhelming. The family faces $74,000 Barbados currency in medical costs to be paid in order for the hospital to release her body, plus an additional $4,500 USD for funeral home services in Barbados to facilitate and coordinate her journey to St. Vincent.
Andrea Bullock is organizing a GoFundMe campaign titled "Support Kayla Bullock’s Final Journey Home." The campaign aims to raise $20,000 CAD, of which $325 CAD has been raised so far from three donations. "Every donation, no matter the size, is a step toward fulfilling this final part of her journey home," Andrea writes on the fundraiser page.
Kyle Bullock expressed his deepest gratitude: "Your kindness and generosity will forever be remembered during this challenging time. Thank you for standing with us and for your unwavering support."
Friends and supporters have shared their condolences and memories on Facebook. Connie Bautista commented, "Our condolences to the Bullock Family," reflecting the collective grief and support for the family.
Despite individual pain and the heavy financial burden, this fundraising effort highlights the necessity for collective togetherness in crises. It also illustrates the often overlooked issues families face when seeking medical care and arranging final rites across borders.
