The late Kathryn Varner, affectionately known as Kat, from Thomasville, North Carolina, recently passed away. Her family and the community are mourning her loss and working to support her son, Nick, during this difficult time. Kimberly Wheeler Newnam, Kat’s sister, is organizing a fundraiser to help cover the costs of a memorial service and provide financial support for Nick.
Kat had a vibrant personality and was known for her ability to make others laugh and feel welcome. "Kat never met a stranger and was kind to everyone," Kimberly wrote on the GoFundMe page. "She has always been able to see the humor in so much." This sentiment is echoed by many who knew her, including friends and family who have shared their thoughts on Facebook.
Kimberly shared that Kat was in hospice care following a long battle with health issues stemming from an ischemic stroke in November 2022, which resulted in extensive brain damage, global aphasia/apraxia, and right-sided hemiparesis. "Kat was most recently hospitalized and released into the care of hospice, unfortunately, with little to no hope of recovery," Kimberly explained. Despite these challenges, Kat’s spirit remained strong, and she was always a source of joy and laughter for those around her.
Nick, Kat’s son, has been a steadfast caretaker since the sudden passing of his father, Randy, in May 2019. At the young age of 19, Nick took on the responsibility of caring for his mother, showing immense strength and dedication. Kimberly noted, "Nick has always been extremely close to Kat and most definitely stepped up when his dad passed away." The family hopes to raise $2,500 to honor Kat’s memory and support Nick, who has struggled to maintain employment due to the demands of his caretaking role.
The fundraiser has garnered significant support from the community, with donations from individuals like Stephen Hart, Jennifer B Lowe, Crystal Pallas, Angela F OBryant, and Kevin Smith. "We appreciate any amount you may give and thank you ever so much," Kimberly expressed, highlighting the family’s gratitude for the support they have received.
Kat’s memory lives on through the stories and love shared by her family and friends. "She never failed to keep me laughing and was always the life of any party," Kimberly fondly recalled. As the family navigates this challenging time, they are grateful for the prayers and support from those who knew and loved Kat.
