The late Joel Matejka was a beloved coworker at United Airlines. His sudden passing has left the community and his family in profound grief. Joel was known for his warm personality and his ability to brighten anyone’s day with a hug, high-five, or his signature sarcastic humor.
Joel passed away unexpectedly on the morning of June 24, 2024. His loss has been particularly hard on his wife, Lori, and their daughter, Peyton, who now face the daunting task of moving forward without him. In addition to their emotional pain, they are burdened with funeral and burial costs, as well as the imminent loss of medical insurance coverage. Lori, who has been battling chronic health issues, relies on this insurance for her prescriptions and an upcoming hip replacement surgery scheduled in August. The family also needs support to cover mortgage payments, monthly bills, and Peyton’s college loans.
A GoFundMe campaign has been organized by William Stef to support Lori and Peyton during this difficult time. The fundraiser aims to raise $50,000 to help alleviate their financial burdens. So far, it has raised $120 from two donations, including $100 from Carol Gray and $20 from an anonymous donor.
The outpouring of support on Facebook reflects the deep impact Joel had on those around him. Michael Johns shared, "I’m sure that there are many people at United Airlines and beyond, who share my sense of shock and sadness by the sudden loss of our coworker and friend Joel Matejka. His passing is yet another reminder to appreciate every day, and keep in perspective the things that do and don’t really matter." Michael Balog added, "Well said Mike. RIP Joel!! Peace and love always to the Matejka family!"
Other heartfelt messages include:
- Mary Ann LaGuardia Martone: "Sorry for your loss."
- Heidi Galasso: "I am in shock, sending thoughts and prayers to family and friends."
- Greg Barr: "I remember Joel. Sorry for your loss, Michael. All the more reason to retire and enjoy what’s left of life."
- Chris Avila: "God just took home one of the greatest men he’s ever created. I cannot tell you how much I am going to miss him. RIP my friend. Prayers and condolences to the Matejka family and friends."
- Richard J Perez: "One of the best and most enjoyable co-workers I have known in my career with United. People like you, Joel, are a true blessing to have known in life. May you rest in peace, my friend. We’ll never forget the great memories we all shared through the years."
The community’s response highlights Joel’s positive impact and the deep void his absence has created. This fundraising effort is not just about financial support but also a testament to the collective grief and the necessity for solidarity during such a challenging time.
