Jai’mani Amir Rivera, a 7-year-old boy from United Center Park in Chicago, was tragically shot to death on June 18, 2024. Jai’mani was walking out of the Oakley Square Apartments, where he lived, when he was struck by gunfire. Known for his love of playing football, Jai’mani was excited to start the upcoming football season. His family and the community are heartbroken and angry over his untimely death.
Jai’mani’s uncle, Cesar Zamora, expressed his sorrow and anger on Facebook, sharing, "Tragic news hit my family as this beautiful little boy I can proudly say was a nephew to me, called me tio, was murdered yesterday. No words can express my sorrow and my ANGER." He also mentioned the family’s plans to move out of Chicago to provide Jai’mani with a safer environment to play.
The community has rallied to support Jai’mani’s family during this difficult time. A GoFundMe campaign has been organized by Lucila Berrios to help cover funeral expenses and provide some relief to the grieving family. As of today, the fundraiser has raised $935 out of a $20,000 goal, with donations from friends, family, and compassionate strangers. The top donation so far is $250 from Katarzyna Clancy.
Friends and family have taken to Facebook to share their condolences and memories. Michelle Hulsart commented, "Omg I just saw this on the news. I’m so sorry for your family’s loss." Frankie Gonzalez, reflecting on the loss, shared, "My lil cuz." Another mourner, Cristina Doitdoit Hernandez, mentioned the impact Jai’mani had on the local youth football team, "I know he was a part of the Saints and they wanted to reach out but of course wanted to give some time."
In a heartfelt post, Jai’mani’s mother, who manages the GoFundMe page, wrote, "My name is Jai’mani Amir Rivera and I was only 7 years old when my life was taken. I was the most loving, affectionate handsome boy. I believed I was Spider-man in real life! I was getting ready to start football for the upcoming season and I was so excited about it. Unfortunately, I won’t make it to the 2nd grade. I won’t get to hug and tell my mother how much I love her anymore. I don’t get to grow up. My life was cut short due to gun violence and it’s not fair. My family is asking for any help in laying me to rest as peacefully as possible."
The community continues to mourn the loss of Jai’mani, offering their prayers and support to his family. This tragic event underscores the devastating impact of gun violence on families and communities, and the need for collective efforts to address and prevent such senseless acts.
