The late Glen Dale Akins was a well-loved member of the Shawnee community. His family and friends are now grappling with the loss of a man who was known for his kindness, his love of fishing, and his passion for CB radio, where he was known worldwide by his handle "Squirrel."
Glen’s nephew, Cole Akins, has organized a GoFundMe campaign to raise $7,000 for Glen’s final expenses. Glen will be cremated, and his sons wish to provide a gravestone and burial plot to honor his memory. The campaign highlights Glen’s difficult final years, marked by the loss of his wife, Pamela Akins, and his parents, Oscar Bernard Akins and Jewell Akins. Glen was also struck by a car, which left him disabled and residing at the Regency nursing home in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
The fundraiser, which was created today, has yet to receive its first donation. Cole Akins’ heartfelt message reads, "Hello, we are very saddened that our beloved family member Glen Dale Akins has passed away. He worked for the Shawnee Milling Company for over 20 years and had many friends and loved ones. Glen suffered in his last years with the loss of his wife and parents. He was a heck of a good man and enjoyed spending time fishing and off-roading."
Mary Akins shared her thoughts on Facebook, saying, "Please share," encouraging the community to support the memorial fund.
Glen’s story is a testament to the love and dedication of his family, who are determined to give him a dignified farewell. The campaign serves as a call to action for those who knew and loved Glen, urging them to come together to honor his memory and provide him with the final resting place he deserves.
