The late Gil Ramirez from Santa Barbara passed away on June 22nd, 2024, while preparing to launch his kayak for a fishing trip. This tragic and sudden loss has left his family and community in deep mourning. Gil was a beloved son, father, grandfather, husband, brother, and friend, known for his ability to fix anything and his empathetic nature.
Gil was a prominent figure at New House, where he worked with thousands of men in early recovery, setting an example of accountability and empathy. Santa Barbara New House described him as a "legend" and expressed their condolences to his family, emphasizing his significant impact on the community.
To honor Gil’s memory and give him the farewell his family envisioned, his daughter Nicole Coughlan has organized a GoFundMe campaign titled "Honoring Gil Ramirez: A Fisherman’s Farewell." As of today, the campaign has raised $550 out of its $10,000 goal, with contributions from friends and community members, including Robb Murphy, Max Perutz, Adam Burridge, Nickolas DeValk, and Lucas Brown.
Jimmy James, a friend of Gil’s, posted on Facebook, "Love you Gil Ramirez, appreciate you always man!!"
The family is deeply appreciative of the love and support they have received during this incredibly difficult time. A fellow fisherman noted that Gil "passed with the sound of the waves in his ears," a fitting tribute to his love for the sea.
Nicole Coughlan, who is organizing the fundraiser, can be contacted for more information about the memorial and the family’s needs during this time.
