The late Gerald Sessoms, affectionately known as Uncle Gerald, was from Wilson, North Carolina. He tragically passed away due to a motorcycle accident. The community and his family are now faced with the task of organizing a fitting memorial service for a man who was known for his generosity and kind spirit.
Gerald’s sister, Joyce Dowdy, has taken the initiative to create a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the funeral costs. The goal is to raise $5,000 to ensure Gerald’s funeral is a dignified tribute to his life. Despite having a policy to cover some funeral expenses, the remaining amount is insufficient for a decent homegoing.
Joyce shared, "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gerald Sessoms. As we come together to celebrate his life, we are also faced with the financial burden of funeral expenses. Your support and generosity mean the world to us during this difficult time."
The family and friends are encouraging donations through GoFundMe, cashapp ($Joycedowdy56), or directly at his house where a donation box will be available at 600 Lincoln St Lot 7, Wilson, NC. The community is invited to pay their respects and show support under the tent set up by the family.
One of Gerald’s friends, BlaCkk Queenn, reflected on Facebook, "Uncle Gerald did have a policy to cover the funeral expense, but the way he had it set up the remaining amount left isn’t enough to cover the expenses to have a decent homegoing. We all know he was a GIVER, and always did a Good Deed with the community. He would give the shirt off his back if he had to."
Public viewing and visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at William Toney’s Funeral Home in Spring Hope, NC. The Celebration of Life Service will take place at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at St. Mary Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ Church in Bailey, NC, followed by interment at Meeks Cemetery in Spring Hope.
The family appreciates all the love, visits, prayers, and donations. This campaign is not only a plea for financial help but also a testament to the community’s collective memory and respect for Gerald Sessoms.
