Elida Barbosa, a cherished member of the San Antonio community, passed away on June 15, 2024, after a brief but terminal illness. She was 60 years old.
Elida was married to her soulmate, Jesus, for 45 years. Together, they raised five children, 21 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Her family was the center of her life, and she was known for her unwavering dedication to them. Elida often put the needs of her chronically ill husband before her own, exemplifying the true spirit of loyalty and care.
On May 8th, Elida visited the ER, which led to a hospitalization after she suffered a minor stroke. Subsequent scans revealed a metastatic lung mass, a diagnosis that came as a shock. Despite the grave news, Elida remained hopeful and prayed with a hospital chaplain. However, her condition worsened with a second stroke just 20 days later, leaving her severely debilitated.
The family decided to bring Elida home with hospice care, but she passed away in the hospital before this could happen. The speed and severity of her illness left the family unprepared for the high costs of her funeral. Maria Salazar, Elida’s sister-in-law, has organized a GoFundMe campaign to help cover these expenses.
Maria writes, “The family is devastated by Elida’s untimely loss and was not prepared for the high cost of a funeral service. They want to give Elida the funeral she deserves to honor her memory and say goodbye.”
Marie Elizabeth Rodriguez shared her thoughts on Facebook, expressing her grief: "Elida was a special person to me and my children. Words are so hard for me right now. She was a big part of my life. I’ve known her for over 30 years. God has decided to take her home to rest. She has brought us here together in the time of need. My condolences to the Barbosa family. My heart is sad."
Maria E. Salazar also shared on Facebook about the fundraiser: "I created a GFM account on behalf of my brother, nieces, and nephews. My sister-in-law died yesterday after a short terminal illness. We will miss her dearly. Please take the time to read, share, and possibly make a donation towards her funeral expenses."
The family hopes to raise $10,000 to cover the funeral costs and give Elida the farewell she deserves.
