The late Eleshia Grosscup, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has left her community and family in deep mourning. Eleshia battled a severe genetic disorder called hyperlipoproteinemia, which caused her body to struggle with lipid processing. Her condition led to repeated hospitalizations over the years, and she was admitted to the hospital six weeks ago with extremely high triglyceride levels and pancreatitis.
Eleshia’s health deteriorated despite numerous treatments, procedures, and tests. Last Tuesday, she was airlifted to Omaha for more intensive care. Her condition worsened as she developed two different infections, leading to sepsis. On Sunday evening, Eleshia’s organs began to shut down, and she passed away shortly after 5 p.m.
Eleshia Grosscup leaves behind her husband, Jason Grosscup, and their children: Zayden, Evelynn, Kayla, and Lucas. In the wake of her passing, her family and friends have expressed their grief and love on social media. Laura G Hayes shared an emotional tribute on Facebook, recounting Eleshia’s journey and the impact she had on those around her:
"Six weeks ago, Eleshia was admitted to the hospital in Sioux Falls, not feeling well. It was discovered that her triglycerides were in the 10 thousands and she was experiencing pancreatitis. She has long battled a health condition called hyperlipoproteinemia, a genetic disorder where the body struggles to process lipids. She’s been in the hospital several times throughout the years, at times we weren’t sure if she would pull through. This one was no different. They began treatments to try and alleviate her pain, and treat the cause. Her body fought long and hard. She underwent several procedures and tests including removal of fluids from her organs, CT Scans, MRIs and much more to identify and treat her. She was daily struggling with a lot of pain."
Jason Grosscup shared the story of their love and her final days on a GoFundMe page organized by Jackie Wall to support his family:
“About 4 years ago, I met a kind, loving, matched my sarcasm beautiful woman. Eleshia … you mean the world to me. These past 3 1/2 years have been the absolute best of my life. We built a family with Kayla, Lucas, Zayden and 10 months ago, little miss Evelynn. When I met Eleshia Grosscup, I was aware of the health issue she has dealt with for about 25 years. This woman overcame lengthy stays in numerous hospitals over that time. I promised her that I would never leave her side. 4 weeks ago tomorrow, we were married in her hospital room in Sioux Falls, SD where we live. 6 weeks ago today, she told me she wasn’t feeling well and that I should take her in. Last Tuesday, a decision was made for a higher level of care. She was airlifted to the Nebraska Medical Center. Today, Sunday June 30th… at 5:18 this evening, my beautiful wife is no longer suffering or in pain. Rest in peace my gorgeous bride. I love you always and forever.”
Friends and family have rallied around Jason and his children. Laura G Hayes’s post also highlighted the support they’ve received:
"She was my person, and I hers in the most perfect sense of who a best friend is. Thank you to everyone who passed along well wishes. And to the friends who have stopped by, dropped off groceries, and helped with my kids, you’re angels. Each day seems to get easier, for now anyway."
The GoFundMe campaign aims to raise $15,000 to help Jason cover foreseeable expenses and funeral arrangements. Eleshia’s story is a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by those with chronic health conditions and the strength and support of community and loved ones during times of loss.
