The late Dylan Key was a beloved student at Vail Ranch Middle School (VRMS) in Temecula. The community, along with his family, is reeling from the tragic incident that led to his untimely death. Dylan was actively involved in several school activities, including the advanced drama program, Peer Leaders, and the VRMS basketball team. His presence and friendship deeply impacted many, and he will be sorely missed by his peers and teachers.
On May 26th, Dylan and his siblings were hit by an impaired driver who ran a red light. All three children were hospitalized, but Dylan suffered the most severe injuries and had been in the ICU at Loma Linda until he was declared brain dead last night. In a final act of generosity, his family decided to donate his organs.
In response to this tragedy, Kathleen Weismiller organized a GoFundMe campaign to support the Key family. The fundraiser aims to alleviate the financial burdens of hospital bills and funeral costs during this heartbreaking time. As of today, the campaign has raised $9,745 of its $30,000 goal, with 29 donations. Kathleen herself made a significant contribution of $7,000, reflecting the close bond she shares with the family.
The VRMS PTSA expressed their condolences on Facebook, highlighting Dylan’s integral role in the school community and the profound loss felt by all who knew him. "The VRMS PTSA would like to express our deepest condolences to everyone impacted by the sudden loss of one of our very own Bulldogs, Dylan Key. Dylan was such an integral part of VRMS, whether it be participating in the advanced drama program, being involved with Peer Leaders, playing on the VRMS basketball team, or just being a great friend to so many on campus, Dylan will truly be missed!"
Kathleen Weismiller’s heartfelt message on the GoFundMe page encapsulates the collective grief and support from the community: "With a heavy heart, I am starting this fundraiser to help the Key family in their heartbreaking time of need. On May 26th, an impaired driver ran a red light and hit all three Key children and sent them to the hospital. Dylan, the youngest of the Key children had the worst injuries and has been in the ICU at Loma Linda ever since. Last night he was declared brain dead and the family will be donating his organs."
This fundraiser is a testament to the strong community spirit and the outpouring of love and support for the Key family during these tragic times.
