The late Dixie Ruiz from Hazel Park was only 24 years old, brimming with life and dreams alongside her loving fiancée, Ethan. Tragically, her future plans were cut short when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in August 2023. Despite seeking medical advice for persistent pelvic pain, it wasn’t until further testing revealed a 23-pound tumor that her condition was identified as cancer.
Swift medical intervention led to the removal of the tumor, followed by six months of chemotherapy and radiation, which concluded in February. Dixie and her family celebrated her status as a survivor, but their joy was short-lived. Just four months later, the cancer returned aggressively, spreading and causing her health to deteriorate rapidly.
Dixie spent her final months in and out of the ICU, battling complications and attempting to gain enough strength for another round of treatments. Sadly, on June 21st, Dixie fainted at home. Rushed to the hospital, she was found to have a large pulmonary embolism. Despite immediate medical intervention, Dixie did not regain consciousness and passed away 24 hours later.
Now, her family is left to cope with the devastating loss and the financial burden of her funeral. A fundraiser organized by Taylor Marr seeks to raise $2,500 to cover funeral expenses and the cost of transporting her ashes, father, and fiancée home. So far, $85 has been raised from three donations.
Dixie’s untimely death has left her family and community in mourning, grappling with the void left by her absence and the harsh reality of cancer’s relentlessness.
