The late DaViawn Blackmon, a 13-year-old from Louisville, was tragically shot and killed in the city’s Chickasaw neighborhood on Wednesday night. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed that DaViawn died from a gunshot wound in the 3800 block of West Broadway. Louisville Metro Police responded to a reported shooting in the 700 block of South 38th Street around 10:30 p.m., where they found DaViawn already deceased at the scene. The LMPD Homicide Unit is investigating, but no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made.
DaViawn’s mother, Dawn Brown, has organized a fundraiser to honor his memory and cover funeral and memorial expenses. The fundraiser has raised $450 of its $25,000 goal from four donations, including contributions from Maria Hughes, Teandrea Mansfield, Glenn Delong, and Shelton McElroy. Dawn described DaViawn, also known as "Dae Dae," "D.J.," "Chef Dee," or "King Dee," as an intelligent, talented, and witty young boy who struggled with mental illnesses. Despite these challenges, he had many goals and dreams for his future.
Dawn’s plea on the fundraiser page highlights the heartbreak of losing her son to violence and the difficulties she faced in securing life insurance due to his mental health issues. "Whoever met him fell in love with him," she wrote, emphasizing his positive impact on those around him. She is now seeking financial assistance to give DaViawn the memorial he deserves and to start a movement in his name to help others facing similar struggles.
Faith Bennett, a member of the community, shared her thoughts on Facebook, reflecting the collective grief and support for Dawn and DaViawn. The tragic loss of DaViawn Blackmon has left a deep void in the Louisville community, as they come together to mourn and remember a young life taken too soon.
