The late Chance Connor was a beloved 13-year-old boy from Echuca, Victoria, whose unexpected passing has left his family and community in deep sorrow. Chance was a vibrant young man, known for his big heart and infectious spirit.
On the morning of Thursday, June 20th, Chance followed his usual routine, going to school after a loving farewell to his mother. However, that day took a tragic turn when Chance fell ill. His mother, Regina, picked him up from school, thinking it was a common cold or flu. After a day of rest and a night spent together watching a movie, Regina noticed something was wrong the next morning. Chance was having a seizure and was immediately rushed to the ER in Echuca.
Despite being quickly put into a coma to relieve his body’s stress, tests revealed that Chance had contracted Influenza A. Initially, it seemed he might recover with treatment, but as the day progressed, his condition worsened. Further tests revealed he was suffering from Acute Necrotizing Encephalopathy (ANE), a rare and severe condition associated with Influenza A.
Despite receiving the best medical care and being transferred to Melbourne for further treatment, the doctors were unable to save Chance. On Wednesday, June 26th, surrounded by his immediate family, Chance passed away peacefully.
Chance’s death has profoundly affected his family, friends, and the broader community. He was the youngest of five children and had recently become an uncle, a role he cherished. Known for his ability to make everyone smile, Chance was a beacon of joy and compassion. At school, he was popular and always inclusive, making sure no one felt left out.
To help his family during this tragic time, Sarah J. Holman has organized a fundraiser. The goal is to ease the financial burden of funeral costs and provide the family with time to grieve without the immediate pressure of returning to work. So far, $415 AUD has been raised out of a $7,000 goal through the generosity of friends and community members.
Chance Connor’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His family, still in shock, is trying to come to terms with their loss while appreciating the support they have received during this difficult period.
