The late Beth M. Fiume was from Auburn, New York. The community and her loved ones are grappling with her unexpected passing, compounded by the fact that her final wishes could not be honored. Beth wanted to be cremated and her ashes scattered in the ocean with her parents, but her family did not claim her, leaving her boyfriend, Shawn Quartier, unable to fulfill her wishes due to their unmarried status.
Shawn Quartier has created a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for a headstone for Beth, who is buried at Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York, Plot 71 east lawn. As of June 25, 2024, the campaign has raised $375 of its $2,000 goal, with three donations made so far. An anonymous donor contributed $250, another gave $100, and a third donated $25.
Shawn expressed his need for community support on Facebook: "Please help Beth. She didn’t get what she wanted—to be cremated and put in the ocean with her mom and dad." He further explains on the GoFundMe page, "My name is Shawn. I am starting this GoFundMe to get a headstone for my girlfriend, Beth M. Fiume. She wanted to be cremated and put in the ocean with her mom and dad. However, the family didn’t claim her and we were not married, so I couldn’t get any information."
Charles L. Thompson, among others, shared the GoFundMe campaign on Facebook, urging friends and the broader community to contribute to the cause. The campaign is a reflection of Shawn’s dedication to Beth’s memory and a plea for assistance in providing her with a proper marker at her resting place.
Despite the challenges and heartbreak, this fundraising effort highlights the importance of community support in times of personal loss and the need for collective assistance to honor loved ones’ memories.
