Andrew Rainey, affectionately known as Andy, was tragically killed in a road rage incident on Monday in Lebanon, Ohio. Andy, a beloved member of the community, was known for his outgoing personality and his dedication to helping others.
Caron Ward, a close friend, shared her memories of Andy on Facebook. "The last time I saw Andy, we were sitting on the steps of my little yellow house eating ice cream from the Whippy Dip. He was in the Singles’ group at Lebanon Presbyterian Church," she recalled. Andy was deaf from birth, which often caused him to speak loudly. Despite his size, he was known as a "Gentle Giant" with a great sense of humor. He had previously lived in a carriage house behind Caron’s home and was always willing to lend a hand, especially in rebuilding homes after natural disasters.
The incident that led to Andy’s death unfolded at a traffic light. Andy, driving a white pickup truck, approached the driver of a white Miata to inform him of a tail light issue. Due to his loud voice and large stature, the Miata driver misinterpreted Andy’s intentions and felt threatened. Witnesses reported that Andy, who rarely resorted to violence, allegedly threw a punch, after which the other driver shot him. The shooter, during the 911 call, claimed his gun was holstered when asked if it was secured. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact details.
The news of Andy’s death has deeply affected those who knew him. "He was loved by so many people and now he’s gone. LOVE was his motivating force," Caron Ward expressed. Other friends also shared their condolences online. Nicole Sears wrote, "My deepest condolences," while Jack Kolkmeyer commented, "So sad," and Edi Jenkins added, "I am so sorry to hear this. God rest his soul."
In response to this unexpected tragedy, Beau Frazier, along with Sally Rainey, organized a fundraiser to support Andy’s family and cover his final expenses. The fundraiser, titled "Honoring Andy Rainey: Support His Family," has raised $500 of its $20,000 goal through six donations so far. "Due to the unforeseen tragic events that lead to his death, our family is totally unprepared for his final expenses and we could really use your help," Beau wrote on the fundraiser page.
Andy Rainey’s death has left a significant void in the hearts of those who knew him. His legacy of kindness and service to the community will be remembered by all.
