The late Andres Pancha was tragically killed while fishing alone at Frankston Pier in the early hours of Saturday morning. Andres, a seafarer employed on the INCO barge, was a respected member of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) – Victoria Branch for more than twelve years. He was a beloved colleague and friend to many.
Andres was randomly attacked by a person not known to him, who has since been charged with murder. This shocking and senseless act has left his wife, three children, extended family, and friends devastated. The MUA has set up a donation account to assist his family through this traumatic time, with details provided for contributions to Unity Bank.
The outpouring of grief and condolences from colleagues and friends highlights the deep impact Andres had on those around him. Jez Kibb reflected on Andres’ journey to the sea, mentioning, "He was too short to join the Navy or the Philippine Police force, so he went to sea. He was told he could only sail on bulk carriers because he was so small."
Many colleagues shared their sorrow and memories:
- Michael Chalk: "RIP Brother. Have great memories of sailing with you on Iron Chieftain and Goliath, a true gentleman. Condolences to your devastated family."
- Gussy Kibbs: "I remember sailing on the Goliath with Pancha as a TIR. He was the most lovely, caring bloke you’ll ever meet."
- Michael O’Shane: "Love you my brother, Pancha, always a great family man, loving father and husband, shipmate, and friend. Vale Andres Pancha."
- Stephen Barnes: "RIP Andres, truly saddened by this tragedy. I’ve never met a gentle soul as you. My deepest condolences to your wife and three little ones."
A fundraiser has been organized by Katalina and Karen Vergara to support Andres’ family and honor his memory. The campaign has raised $3,230 AUD of its $30,000 goal with 66 donations so far. The community’s support is crucial as the family navigates this period of profound grief and loss.
Andres will be remembered for his kindness, love of nature, and passion for fishing. His untimely death serves as a reminder to cherish loved ones and spread kindness. Rest in peace, Andres. You will forever be in our hearts.
