The late Alyssa Bane Owens was a beloved member of the Strasburg community and a dedicated Special Education Teacher at her alma mater, Strasburg High School. Her unexpected passing has left a profound impact on her family, friends, and the community she served with such dedication. To honor her memory and commitment to education, her classmates from the Strasburg High School Class of 2011 have established the Alyssa Bane Owens Memorial Scholarship.
Jesse Pearson, who is organizing the fundraiser for the scholarship, shared that it aims to support graduating Strasburg High School seniors with disabilities. Alyssa’s dedication to her students was unparalleled, and this scholarship is intended to help future students feel successful and appreciated in their endeavors.
The fundraiser, created today, has raised $1,244 of its $10,000 goal with 11 donations so far. Contributions have come from friends, family, and community members who wish to honor Alyssa’s legacy. Among the notable donations, Jonathan Pearson gave $500, the top donation, followed by Kaylee Smith’s $200 contribution and Holly Henschel’s $25, which was the first donation.
On Facebook, Alyssa’s impact and the support for the scholarship have been evident. Jan Hodson Bane expressed deep gratitude, saying, "Thank you class of 2011. This means so much to our family. Alyssa would be so honored. She loved her classmates and Strasburg High School." Other community members have also shared their support. Allison Yates Martin commented, "Love this so much," while Tammy Sue sent her thoughts and prayers to Jan and the family, saying, "This is so very special! Dear Jan(and family)- I am keeping you close in my thoughts and prayers. Sending you so much love."
The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their love and appreciation for Alyssa and the scholarship in her name. Jennifer Miller Mason, Katie Victoria, and Julia McGough all shared their love for the initiative, highlighting the unity and support within the Strasburg community.
The creation of the Alyssa Bane Owens Memorial Scholarship not only serves as a tribute to Alyssa’s life and work but also as a beacon of hope for future generations of students who will benefit from her enduring legacy.
