The late Alex Wierzba was a 9th-grade student at AEF Schools in Hollywood, Florida. On the night of May 16, 2024, Alex and his older brother Richard were victims of a senseless act of violence, suffering gunshot wounds. Tragically, Alex was placed on life support with no brain activity and has since been taken off life support by his grandmother, Tina Wierzba. Richard remains in critical condition.
The Wierzba family has been a part of the AEF community since 2016, with Richard enrolling as an 8th grader and Alex joining a year later as a 3rd grader. The school has been deeply affected by this tragedy, and grief counselors are available on campus to support students and staff.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, AEF Schools expressed their sorrow: "There are no words for this senseless tragedy. We offer our love and support to Tina Wierzba, their grandmother, as she has the impossible task of trying to come to terms with this shocking event and having to end life support for Alex."
To assist with the financial burdens of medical and burial expenses, AEF Schools has organized a GoFundMe campaign. As of now, $2,385 has been raised towards the $10,000 goal, with donations from community members, including a $1,000 contribution from an anonymous donor and a $100 donation from Olivia Grapsas.
Alex will be remembered as a kind and gentle soul, much like his brother Richard. The community is rallying to support Tina Wierzba during this unimaginable time, hoping for Richard’s full recovery while mourning the loss of Alex.
