Zongde Qiu, an energetic and promising 45-year-old Silicon Valley engineer, tragically lost his life on August 3rd, 2024, while kayak fishing near the Pacifica beaches in California. The incident has left his family, friends, and community in deep mourning.
While enjoying one of his favorite pastimes, Zongde fell off his kayak and was unable to get back on for reasons still unknown. Despite being found by surfers and rushed to emergency care, he could not be revived. His sudden and tragic death has left those who knew him in shock, particularly his close friend Tong Gao, who shared Zongde’s passion for kayak fishing.
Zongde was known for his helpful and selfless nature, always ready to assist others in need. He was also fiercely proud of his alma mater, Tsinghua University, and would defend its honor passionately. Above all, he was a devoted husband to Kexin Zhang and a loving father to their two daughters, Elizabeth, an eighth grader, and Alexandra, a ninth grader. His commitment to his family often saw him canceling kayak trips to support his daughters’ extracurricular activities.
As the sole breadwinner, Zongde’s untimely death has plunged his family into financial turmoil. To help them through this difficult time, Tong Gao has organized a fundraiser with a goal of $20,000 to cover funeral costs and other immediate needs. As of now, the campaign is still awaiting its first supporter.
The community is encouraged to come together to honor Zongde’s memory by supporting his family during this unimaginable period of grief.
We are deeply saddened to learn of Zongde Qiu’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.
