Yeremi Colina, New York, NY— Yeremi Colina tragically passed away this month, leaving a community in mourning. At just 17 years old, Yeremi’s life was cut short in a tragic incident on the streets of Lower Manhattan, where he was reportedly stabbed.
Yeremi was known as the "leader of the pack" by his mother, Beritza Colina. As the eldest of six siblings, he played a central role in his family’s difficult journey from Venezuela to the United States. His mother recalls how, despite the hardships of their journey, Yeremi’s determination helped the family survive. They spent almost six months traveling across multiple countries, facing challenges like selling goods on the streets and sleeping on cardboard boxes. In the dangerous Darien Gap, Yeremi even saved his younger brother from drowning.
The Colina family reached New York City on December 4, 2023, after an arduous journey, and were settled into temporary accommodation at the Roosevelt Hotel. Yet, just over a year later, Yeremi’s life was tragically taken.
In response to the sudden loss, Beritza Colina has started a fundraiser to help cover the family’s immediate expenses, as well as funeral costs. The community is coming together to support them during this incredibly difficult time.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Colina family. May Yeremi’s memory be a source of strength for his loved ones.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this sorrowful time.
