Willy Freddy Chavez Perez—It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and tragic passing of our dear friend and coworker, Willy Chavez Perez, at just 21 years old. Willy was a cherished member of our Lawn Team at Garrett Landscape Group and will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially his brother Roberto and his fellow crew members.
Having come from Guatemala, Willy and Roberto are far from home and the comfort of their parents. To honor Willy’s memory by fulfilling his family’s wish to bring him home to Guatemala for burial, we are asking for your support. Willy Freddy Chavez Perez passed away on July 27, 2024, tragically drowning at Kensington Metro Park, Michigan. His body was found after a long search in the lake. Willy had gone to the park to have a relaxing afternoon with his brother and friends. He went swimming with his brother’s friends and suddenly struggled to breathe. Despite efforts to help him, it was too late to rescue Willy. His body was taken to Ascension Providence Hospital in Novi.
Willy was known for being friendly, respectful, affectionate, kind, an excellent son, a great brother, and an extraordinary friend. He was cheerful, good-hearted, and a devoted servant of God, without any vices. Athletic and dedicated to his faith, he attended church regularly, both in Guatemala and at Jesucristo el Buen Samaritano in Detroit.
Since arriving in Detroit, MI, Willy worked diligently at Garrett Landscape to save money for his dream of becoming a doctor in Guatemala. Both his parents live in Guatemala and wish to hold a funeral service in his homeland. The cost to send his body back to Guatemala for the funeral is $8,485.20. Donations will be used for these funeral expenses, and any extra funds will cover related costs in Guatemala.
So far, $3,040 has been raised from 17 donations, with Garrett Landscape Group contributing the largest donation of $1,200. Jacqueline Garrett made the first donation of $1,000. Donations can also be made through Zelle or Cash App, or in person at Chas Verheyden Inc. Funeral home in Detroit.
Jason Reoch, a friend, and coworker, shared, "It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and tragic passing of our dear friend and coworker, Willy Chavez Perez, at just 21 years old."
